Their mission:
Align our retirement savings with a climate-stable world
What distinguishes Carbon Collective’s approach to sustainable investing portfolios from other investment platforms?
We are not ESG investors. We’re specifically focused on climate and our portfolio approach is deliberately simple: Divest, Reinvest, Pressure the Rest. We don’t hold the companies who’s core business cannot exist in a climate-stable world, we overweight the companies building climate solutions, and broadly hold the rest so we can add our votes to pressure them to transition away from fossil fuels faster.
For investors interested in supporting Carbon Collective’s mission, what avenues or opportunities are available for engagement and investment?
If you’re an individual, we help over 800 households manage their retirement and general investment savings. If you’re a business, we help over 115 businesses and non-profits get a better 401(k) experience that also includes mission-aligned options.
What are some of the key challenges and opportunities that Carbon Collective anticipates in the sustainable investing landscape, both currently and in the future?
The biggest challenge is shaking investors out of the assumption that oil stocks are a necessary evil for performance. They have not been over the past 10 years and the industry as a whole is facing the most significant headwind they ever have. For the first time ever, economically competitive alternatives to fossil fuels are here. Solar + wind + batteries. Electric cars. Etc. And we should expect each of these to get cheaper as supply chains continue to grow and manufacturing efficiencies are uncovered. Oil, on the other hand will only get more expensive. And that’s without climate change factored in. As climate change worsens, the legislative risk to oil companies continues to grow.
